Over the years, I've felt that a major third political party would really benefit American politics. In various aspects of life, I've concluded that when there are only two strongly competing sides to an issue, they tend to lock horns and end up in a stagnant stalemate, and this carries over to America's political system that is dominated by two big parties. Adding a third or even fourth element can break up this impasse because if two parties lock and fail to make progress, the external elements will gain ground right under their noses. This negative stalemate thus becomes too costly for those engaged because the external forces will just outperform them.

The idea of a strong third political party, such as the Green Party, has had its ups and downs over the years and people have doubted its success, including myself at times. However, nowadays, our two-party system has become what many would consider to be dysfunctional to the point at which we would do well to give more merit to third parties and those that do not necessarily closely resemble the dominant parties. My own thinking on this led me to invite Green Party member Beryl Baker back to the show, along with a couple of other local members. I consider myself largely independent, as opposed to partisan, so it's my pleasure to present a variety of perspectives. In addition to Beryl, I'll be joined by former Arizona House of Representatives candidate Kent Solberg and former state legislator John Kromko. We'll take a look at the current state of things from a reasoned, critical point of view and review Beryl and Kent's achievements as they put themselves out there in their respective runs for office.

I'm excited for this show and I'll post more updates as it takes shape. You can bet you'll be watching this promising show on YouTube after the fact. Catch you later!

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EPC9LRKeYkY/TT8IbdmhQkI/AAAAAAAAAAU/DE804lQBHm0/s1600/big_multicolored_logo_transparent.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; emergency charity humanitarian relief donation donate'/>

Final wrap-up of the Philippines charity effort.

It looks like we've done what we can for now with our efforts to aid survivors of the floods in the Philippines that occurred last year. If you're new to the story, I'll sum it up here for you and you might look through this blog for detailed entries.
In December, I received word of a new subscriber to my YouTube channel--Senator Richard Gordon from the Philippines, who is also the chairman of the Philippines Red Cross. Just a few days later, I learned of the disastrous and deadly flooding happening there. These two events inspired me to launch an effort with the Exist Kind name on it to help survivors. An acquaintance of mine is from the Philippines and I decided I should contact him for input and perhaps assistance with this idea. Since he and I met while we were working for an Episcopal church, I then realized that a fundraising effort might do very well if it had the support and endorsement of the Episcopal Church. During a New Year's visit to Phoenix, I stopped by the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona to see if the bishop might consider endorsing the project. I was not able to meet with him personally, but my visit to the cathedral reminded me of the time years ago when I contacted another bishop to ask for a monetary donation to the organization I was volunteering with. I realized that perhaps I should just take a direct approach and contact the bishops from all fifty United States. I sent letters to one bishop from each state to request that they send a donation straight to the Philippines Red Cross for the flood effort and I requested that they simply mention that they were sent by Exist Kind. I received a few responses in the subsequent couple of weeks, and that is where the project has left off.

I'm planning on bringing in a local Episcopal minister to broker the donations for a future effort. I'd like to take this approach for any humanitarian crisis that may arise. We don't yet have a way to keep track of donations and where they're coming from, but the idea is more to tap the bishops on the shoulder and urge them to donate to these causes. Because of this shift towards a broader focus, I of course will not be referring to it as the Philippines flood effort but rather, something else that we generate in the future. Whatever it gets named, it will refer to Exist Kind, the Episcopal Church, and relief efforts. It will occur approximately once per year and only seek out modest donations from each diocese.

So that's the story of this project to date. Thanks for reading and following along, and I'm looking forward to sharing upcoming Exist Kind projects along these lines.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; In the last few weeks, my role of caregiver has been brought to the forefront. Recently, I was given some real property in exchange for supervising my very elderly parents (ages 82 and 97). My mother recently fell very ill and I have had to tend to her in addition to my usual duties to my father. I've been running her around to the emergency room and calling ambulances as she deals with both recovery from a blood clot and working her way through pneumonia. All of this has led to a significant transition in the household and my assuming of greater permanent responsibility for all household functions. So, my outreach and video production efforts have been on hold as I figuratively put out many different fires. I expect the bulk of this transitioning to be done by the end of the month, so I'll be at full power by then. Thanks so much for your time and energy towards Exist Kind!"

So that's why I've been away from the blog and staying low-key on everything else. However, by the time you're reading this, progress is slowly but surely underway. I'm currently balancing the life transitions with my usual Exist Kind work. As a result, I can share some new things with you.

I've decided to actively look for an Episcopal minister who would be willing to act as a liaison between donating dioceses and beneficiaries for upcoming charitable efforts. I have someone in mind with whom I'd like to talk first, and I'll look to others if necessary.

This Saturday the 25th is the annual Peace Fair here in Tucson, if you're not familiar with it, which is sponsored by the Tucson Peace Center. Beth and I always look forward to attending and we always get to talk with interesting people, pick up good literature, and hear good music. We're planning to attend Saturday if no more emergencies or problems prevent us. Look for me in my yellow Exist Kind t-shirt with a redhead at my side.

I have more to tell you, but I'd like to put it in a separate post, so stand by. Thanks for reading!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; We saw this in action in a slightly different manner when we visited the Diocese of Arizona, as I mentioned in that previous blog entry. Keep your fingers crossed so that we pass muster with the other bishops, and stay tuned. I hadn't planned on posting updates because we didn't design a system for tracking donations this time, since they're supposed to go directly from the dioceses to the Red Cross. But, recall that I did ask the bishops to mention Exist Kind to the Red Cross if they donated, so I hope to get wind of a few donations to share with you here.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='philippines filipino filipino-american flood floods "2011 floods" Thank goodness for mail merge tools in word processing software! After a few obstacles, we now are ready to launch the campaign in earnest and see if we can't do something for the flooding survivors in the Philippines. Now we have a plan and a template to work from for future similar projects. It feels good to say we've done our part in another project for the greater good. As time goes on, we plan to occasionally do the same thing for other humanitarian causes--not overly tapping the bishops for a lot of money, but calling on them about once a year or so for a modest donation when we identify a cause such as a natural disaster. We really want to include a church minister to act as a liaison between the bishops and the beneficiary to reinforce the legitimacy of the cause. For now, stay tuned for updates on future mailings like this.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='"dog rescue" The star of the evening was the famous Boo-boo, the dog rescued from the dogfighting ring. The taping went well and we got to feature eight different animals, including two cats from the same litter. We didn't get a chance to feature Chewy on-camera, but we look forward to finishing his story. These PSAs will end up on YouTube and Access Tucson and I'll of course link them here. I've arranged to host FAIR, the Foundation for Animals In Risk, who of course had a huge role in rescuing Chewy and his being nursed back to health. We'll have a few animals from FAIR right on the set to tape some PSAs calling for support of this great organization. I don't know yet if Chewy will be there, but another famous dog, Boo-boo, will be there. Boo-boo was found right around the same time as Chewy by a Good Samaritan who brought him into touch with FAIR. He had been horribly hurt and abused as dogfighting bait and shot with a pellet gun, and apparently left for dead. He's been recovering from serious injuries but he's plugging away and has a great personality. His story even made it into newspapers and onto TV newscasts around the state.

Also happening in Studio A that day is a follow-up to the Jim Rose project for which I coordinated the crew and equipment back in April of last year. Two of the documentarians behind the project will stop by to work with me on one last aspect of the film. This was a real feather in my cap and I'm thankful to have had this opportunity to connect with more people, participate in a documentary, and put this responsibility on my resume.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='philippines filipino filipino-american flood floods "2011 floods" On Tuesday the 3rd, we took a ride down to downtown Phoenix and visited the Episcopal Church's diocesan office at Trinity Cathedral. The goal was to meet briefly with Bishop Kirk Smith, the bishop of the Diocese of Arizona, and obtain his endorsement of the charity drive idea. I would later present this support to the folks I spoke with already in Tucson and we'd ideally be on our way to launching the plan.

Once we found the diocesan office, the bishop was actually engaged in a conference call, so his assistant met with us for a few minutes. I introduced myself, gave her my business card, explained the Exist Kind concept and TV show origins, and summarized the charity plan. She had some valuable information for us: Apparently, many, many people come to their office seeking endorsement along the same lines as us. Bishop Smith is very reluctant to endorse anyone's project for what I think are obvious reasons, and we may well not receive the assistance that we're seeking. However, she is willing to look over my portfolio, as long as I put it together concisely and cleanly for the bishop's ease of reading. She'll then turn it over to him for his review.

At first, I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to actually speak to the bishop in person and that the odds aren't good for getting his support. However, I then realized that this was all valuable information and may possibly change the plan for the better. At this point, I think what I'll do is contact my old acquaintance, the retired Reverend Allen Breckenridge of St. Philip's In the Hills, and review the project with him. Another point that Bishop Smith's assistant made was that I need to demonstrate my connection to the Episcopal Church. I grew up in the church and I worked as a sexton for one church, so the connection is there, but I need someone to vouch for my character and involvement. If my contacts at St. Philip's and St. Francis can do that, I'll return to the diocesan office and be in that much better a position.

Another alternative I'm toying with is a variation on a project I carried out years ago in Mississippi. I might send letters to several Episcopal bishops containing a short grant proposal of sorts. I'd be requesting donations from the church to send to the Philippines Red Cross and the money would be sent on behalf of congregation members from around the country.

So that's the latest on the flood relief project and I'll keep posting as I make progress. I still plan to tape a video clip discussing the situation and my ideas if any of them are reasonably successful.

Emergency: Deadly Floods in the Philippines

I have an associate who is Filipino-American and the last I knew, he was writing for a Filipino newspaper. Several years ago, we collaborated on a successful project and I have since followed his progress and have been pleased to see him do well. I had a chance to visit with him today to talk about a project I have in mind to benefit the survivors of the floods going on in the Philippines. I looked to him for input or assistance in implementing this. Here's what I have in mind.

As well as facilitate and promote people's good causes and efforts, we at Exist Kind of course like to coordinate efforts with the Exist Kind name on them. We want to arrange a donation drive to benefit relief efforts in the Philippines and involve the Filipino-American community in Southern Arizona, as well as anyone else who would like to help. One approach we want to take is to speak with the staff of local Filipino-American businesses and members of cultural organizations to promote a donation drive, passively solicit monetary donations, and direct people in their networks to this blog to get money to organizations such as the Red Cross and Global Giving (most likely those two in particular). We're specifying monetary donations because so many relief efforts nowadays prefer cash over goods, unless a donor is an entity who can provide large quantities of bulk items. The second possibility for this plan is to solicit donations of goods to sell on eBay, the proceeds from which would be diverted (via eBay's tools) to one of these organizations. We'd be looking to donate 85 to 90 percent, with the remainder paying for the operating costs of packaging, shipping, and any fuel expended to pick up donations around town. Either way, we will provide receipts and proof of donations being given to the organizations to assure donors of our intentions.

I'll tape a short video to promote this and post it here and on YouTube shortly.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='samaritans "no more deaths" I'd like to volunteer in blocks of time of about a few weeks so that I have time in between to work on my usual tasks of editing and publicity.

Something that surprised me about the Samaritans was how mainstream and positive they are. They seem conservative but with an open-minded, tolerant edge. I want to assure you that they do not break any laws in performing their work. Following the law is very important to them. My prior work with No More Deaths made these traits more obvious. Both groups are great and serve a good purpose, but their differences are noticeable and they have different strengths and weaknesses. I'd have to say that I like the Samaritans' more cooperative attitude and philosophy, though it's a subtle difference from No More Deaths. NMD's strength is in how cutting-edge it is in terms of tactics. In the end, I decided to write about the Samaritans--their very name tells me that they're more my style.

The blog-style webpage I made was delayed due to some losses of data that I needed to fill it out, but I've decided to move forward with it anyway and take my lumps. With each block of time I devote to the Samaritans, I look forward to learning more and bringing more to their table, and then reporting on the latest progress and happenings. Click on the word "link" to open the webpage, which I'll continue adding to like a blog. After talking with them and FAIR a couple of times, I visited him this afternoon with my significant other. While we waited to see him, we encountered a nice woman who volunteers her time to animal rescue efforts. It turns out that she was at Acacia the day that Lisa and I brought Chewy in. Even niftier, she works with the Shelter Pet Project and expressed interest in helping him find a permanent home. What a great chance meeting!

Since we brought Chewy in, his ruined eye was removed and he has turned out to be blind in the remaining eye, but his other senses are doing fine in compensating for his lack of sight. He's clean and cuddly, calm and friendly—he just needs a couple of days to get used to new people. We chatted with a technician for a while we petted him and took some photos and video footage throughout our visit. The following is a rough draft of a video telling Chewy's story and some of it will later end up in a more polished package that I'll upload to YouTube and submit to cable access channels. Thank you FAIR for helping Chewy!

Stand by for more updates.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='"dog rescue" In order for him to be taken in by a rescue group, though, he had to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Jennifer from the Foundation for Animals in Risk (FAIR) saw my ad on Craig's List and called me to offer assistance. She ended up arranging for him to be seen at Acacia and stay in their care until she could find a home for him. I also heard from a lady named Lisa, who offered to help me bring the dog to Acacia and even wants to help raise money towards his medical expenses. She's an animal lover who likes to help out where she can with rescue efforts. Overall, I received a very strong response from quite a few people who were concerned for the plight of this little dog, and I'm very thankful for all of the suggestions and offers of help.

Below are some pictures I took so that you can see what the little guy looked like.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; They're a constant reminder of the value of taking in stray or unwanted pets.

The other day, another dog in need came my way. He's blind and angry, and I'm not even sure if he's a he or a she. Something happened to his eye, perhaps both eyes, and I found him running around in the middle of four-lane, forty-mile-per-hour Swan Road. Cars were screeching to a halt to avoid hitting him and when they stopped, he would run around and bump into them. I tried to steer him away from the road but hesitated at first because he growled and got rather nasty with me when I tried to get close to him. After watching the traffic cycle repeat itself a couple of times, I knew I couldn't in good conscience leave him out there either to get killed or cause a motorist or two to get killed.

I went back to my house, grapped a soft tarp, and went back to the road, where I corralled the dog inside the tarp. Back at the house, I brought out an old folding door that had been removed from a closet and put it in the front yard, on top of the tarp, folded to make a lean-to for the dog. An old window screen on the end made for a screen door of sorts and I took a small space heater out to the other end and plugged it into an outdoor outlet. I've been feeding him and giving him some water to hold him until I take him to the pet emergency room for treatment.

I'd like to share with you a couple of great resources that I found for getting rescued pets the triage they need while they await foster care or adoption. I haven't yet chosen which one I'll go to, but here's what I've found so far:

Southern Arizona Veterinary
141 E. Fort Lowell Rd. (24-hour emergency room)
Tucson, AZ 85705
(520) 888-3177
www.southernazvets.com

Pima Pet Clinic
4832 E. and Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining

Saturday, May 7th, at 6 pm MST/PDT

Broadcasting live from Access Tucson on Cox channel 120, Comcast 72; and streaming live at http://www.accesstucson.org/.

From the Appalachian organization ILoveMountains.org:

"One of America's most heartbreaking environmental and human rights tragedies, mountaintop removal coal mining is destroying [Appalachia's] rich culture and heritage, as well as the ancient, beautiful mountains and diverse forests of the Appalachian range."

This isn't just another radical environmentalist movement to preserve scenery and impede progress. This is a matter of ordinary citizens in coal country dealing with illness, contaminated water and air, and the risk of disastrous and disgusting flooding and avalanches when tailings impoundments break loose. This process also hurts the local economy because of its efficiency, which costs jobs, and the out-of-town employees that the companies bring in to do the jobs that locals could do. Not to mention, this process takes a toll on citizens' emotional ties to the cultural and historical values of the mountains.

MTR, as it's abbreviated, is no longer limited to Appalachia, either. Take a look at this picture from British Columbia that appeared on the National Geographic website at the end of 2009:

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IxlViw3v1uU/TcV16B44XKI/AAAAAAAAABM/ISHX9twYUJw/s1600/Elk+Valley+MTR+in+BC.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I have to keep it brief today, so tune in if you like and acquaint yourself with this incredible environmental injustice happening to ordinary, down-to-earth citizens who just want to live on the land they've always known and not have it poison them.

I also promised a short project update: The bicycle project is coming along nicely and I've been documenting each step with my video camera. I apologize for not having more follow-up, but that's just because I want to be sure that there's some substantial footage worth showing. I expect to get some material online this week.
